Spartan Auckland has shifted dates to avoid a clash with Ultimate Athlete.
The previously announced postponement date for Spartan Auckland fell on the exact same date, May 21 2022, as Ultimate Athlete Mt Maunganui.
Ultimate Athlete is new to the market since Spartan last held an event in NZ in 2019. Ultimate Athlete launched in 2021 as a game-changer for OCR in NZ, and has expanded to hold a second event in Auckland with plans to further expand into a nation-wide series.
While clashes are not that uncommon between events, the scheduling of two large obstacle race events on the same date and only about 200 km apart would’ve most likely divided signups between the two events and contributed to potentially lower participation rates at each.
After being informed of the event clash, Spartan Australia and NZ shifted the dates for Spartan Auckland to a week earlier and released the following message,
Following the release of the updated Spartan Australia & NZ race schedule we have been informed that we have a clash of dates with a local OCR event in Auckland.
As the global leader in the OCR industry, with a clear commitment to grow OCR in New Zealand, Spartan has made the decision to bring forward the rescheduled event to a week earlier, with the Spartan Auckland Super and NZ Championships now confirmed as 14th and 15th May 2022.
We apologise for any confusion here and appreciate the support of all New Zealand and Australian racers as we strive to stage the biggest and best OCR race ever held in New Zealand in May next year.
Spartan Auckland has been plagued with postponements and date adjustments. After a successful 2019 event in New Zealand, Spartan’s return was announced for July 2020. But unfortunately it was postponed to July 2021, then again to October 2021, then again to November 2021, and most recently to 21-22 May 2022 before being shifted to 14-15 May 2022.
Spartan Auckland is now scheduled for 14-15 May 2022.
Ultimate Athlete Mt Maunganui is scheduled for 21 May 2022.
