Low Turnout at CBD Stampede Didn’t Hamper Enjoyment

Organisers of the CBD Stampede are baffled by this year’s low turnout.

The 5-kilometre obstacle course race around central Christchurch, run by about 150 people on Sunday, was held three weeks later than usual, organiser John Moore said.

“We were a bit surprised really. The event has been growing all the time and this year numbers were down out of the blue.”

The casino was the highlight of the race, with smoke machines, a DJ, and staff dressed as Storm Troopers, Moore said. A man dressed as Father Christmas won best dressed for his seasonally-inappropriate attire.

Moore said the course, which started and finished in Hagley Park and took in several “iconic” locations, followed the Avon River and looped around Cathedral Square and Victoria Square, before the last leg through the casino and Cranmer Square.
