How to Qualify at Spartan Auckland

Spartan returns to Auckland, NZ in 2021. Over three obstacle packed days Spartan will host a Trail run, a Sprint, a Super, a 4-hour Hurricane Heat, a Kid’s race and the inaugural New Zealand Spartan National Championship.

For athletes looking to step up their racing, Spartan Auckland not only has a cash prize pool on the line but it’s also a jumping point to international level competition!

Auckland is a qualifier for three different championship events: the Spartan Asia Pacific Championship, the Spartan World Championship, and the Obstacle Course Racing World Championships.

This guide is for competitive athletes looking to qualify for any of the three championship level events available at Spartan Auckland.

Qualify for the Spartan APAC Championship

APAC Championships 2017

APAC is the Spartan Regional Championships for the Asia-Pacific region. Along with North America, Europe, South America and the Middle East, it is one of five regional championships that lead to the Spartan World Championship.

The date and location of the 2021 APAC Championship is yet to be announced.

To qualify:

Elite athletes may qualify by finishing in the top 10 at the Auckland Sprint or Super.

Age Group athletes may qualify by finishing in the top 10 of their Age Group category at the Auckland Sprint or Super.

Qualify for the Spartan World Championship

Spartan World Championship 2021

As a new addition for 2021, Spartan Auckland is now a qualifier for the Spartan World Championship!

The Spartan World Championship will take place in Abu Dhabi on December 3-4, 2021 and will feature the Elite Spartan World Championship, the Spartan Team World Championship, and the Spartan Kids World Championship. It will also mark the first time that the event will be staged outside of the United States.

Due to covid’s impact on the global event industry there will only be three Spartan National Championships held around the world this year: the New Zealand Championship, the Australian Championship, and the Caribbean Championship. We are very lucky to see the inaugural New Zealand Spartan National Championship, which will be held as part of the Auckland Super.

Full details on how the New Zealand National Championships will work are yet to be announced, but we do know it’s part of the Auckland Super and it’s a direct qualifier for the Spartan World Championship.

To qualify:

Elite athletes may qualify by finishing in the top 10 at the New Zealand National Championship.

Age Group athletes may qualify by finishing in the top 3 at the New Zealand National Championship.

As the chart above indicates, there are 1140 total Elite spots and 4180 total Age Group spots at the World Championship, 80 of which are reserved for the New Zealand National Championship (20 elite and 60 age group) to be decided at Auckland. Let the battle begin!

Qualify for the OCR World Championships

Drawing more than 5,000 athletes from 70 nation, the OCR World Championships is the premier independent world championships for the sport of Obstacle Course Racing.

The 2021 OCR World Championships will be held September 23-26 in Vermont, USA.

To qualify:

Elite athletes may qualify by finishing in the top 10 at the Auckland Sprint or Super.

Age Group athletes may qualify by finishing in the top 25 in each age group (Competitive and Elite) or top 5 in each age group in Open at the Auckland Sprint or Super.
